Veliky Novgorod is the cradle of Russian culture. The first mention of this great city dates back to the 9th century. Interestingly enough, Veliky Novgorod is an important landmark in the history of the Russian Orthodox icon. It was in the ancient Novgorod Republic where one of the major schools of Russian icon painting was founded in the 14th century. The Novgorod school started a new stylistic movement that marked the transition from the Byzantine style, which was adopted by Russian icon painters in the 10th century.

The Novgorod Museum-Reserve was established in 1865 and is often referred to as the biggest museum in the Novgorod Region and one of the oldest museums in Russia. Its current art collection is located in a 19th-century building and features around 650,000 items, ranging from ancient book printing and archeological artifacts to jewelry, household items, and icons. The Novgorod Museum-Reserve is a complex of buildings and architectural sights, which includes the marvelous 15th-century citadel, cathedrals, churches, and monuments. The beautiful nature surrounding the Museum is worth a separate mention because the Novgorod Museum-Reserve is situated on the bank of the wide Volkhov River.
