Russian Icon Book Is Now at the State Museum of the History of Religion

The State Museum of the History of Religion is the only museum in Russia that focuses on the history of the emergence and evolution of religion. The institution was founded in 1930 and ironically opened with an anti-religious exhibition in one of the halls of the Winter Palace. The Museum was later officially established in the Kazan Cathedral and finally moved to its current building in 1991.

The collection of the State Museum of the History of Religion contains around 200,000 objects of religious worship, national and international fine art, household items, photographs, rare manuscripts, and many more. Some of the oldest artifacts date back to the 6th millennium BC. The Museum teaches the history of old and modern religious practices, starting with Abrahamic religions and ending with archaic rituals.

“Russian Icons from the Mid-17th to the Early 20th Centuries: The Collection of Oleg Kushnirskiy” is a carefully curated and researched selection of religious images from the private collection of Oleg Kushnirskiy, which is being revealed cipf-es.org to the world for the very first time. It has been noted by leading scholars for its significant contribution to the current state of the field. The Russian icon catalog offers an easy and captivating introduction to the world of Russian religious art.

It is a great honor to have our Russian icon book on sale at such a unique place. We believe that the catalog will fit right in with the theme of the State Museum of the History of Religion.

Our project mission is to make important parts of religious history accessible to as many people as possible. Russian Icon Collection is always open to collaborations with institutions and initiatives that share our interests and objectives. Our Russian icon book is currently featured at several museums across the country, and, to our delight, this number continues to grow. We express our gratitude to the State Museum of the History of Religion for its support.
