Our Catalog Goes to the Regional Scientific Library of Arkhangelsk

Russian Icon Collection is thankful for the opportunity to spread the appreciation of Russian icon painting as far across the country as possible. Today, we are happy to say that our book, “Russian Icons from the Mid-17th to the Early 20th Centuries: The Collection of Oleg Kushnirskiy,” has been added to the catalog of the Regional Scientific Library of Arkhangelsk named after N.A. Dobrolyubov. We are overjoyed to collaborate with regional institutions that cherish the history and cultural heritage of Russian icons as much as we do.

Our Catalog Goes to the Regional Scientific Library of Arkhangelsk

The Regional Scientific Library of Arkhangelsk named after N.A. Dobrolyubov was founded in 1833, becoming the first public library in Arkhangelsk. Since then, the institution has gone through a series of renovations, with its collection allegedly growing 24 times after the Russian Revolution. Currently, the Library holds over 2,2 million items, including periodical publications and printed books.

The Regional Scientific Library of Arkhangelsk is an important cultural center that helps preserve the legacy of the area. Its special collection titled “The Russian North,” which was established in 1889, offers over 200,000 publications centering the regional studies of the Northern part of Russia. Today, most of the items in the collection are available online, providing access to the documented history and culture of the region.

Our catalog, “Russian Icons from the Mid-17th to the Early 20th Centuries: The Collection of Oleg Kushnirskiy,” contains a unique selection of antique Russian icons that are part of the private collection of Oleg Kushnirskiy, an icon collector who dedicated his life to gathering pieces of Russian religious art from different parts of Russia and the US. The book offers an illustrated tour of the evolution of the Russian icon painting tradition. Each featured piece is followed by a detailed description for an immersive and educational experience. The catalog also includes articles authored by notable scholars in the areas of cultural studies and art history.

Russian Icon Collection is thankful to the Regional Scientific Library of Arkhangelsk for writing about our book on their website. We are overjoyed by the fact that thanks to our collaboration with this and many other wonderful institutions across the country, our Russian icon catalog will reach a large audience. Accessibility of knowledge is the key point in preserving valuable pages of the Russian icon painting tradition. Hopefully, the work and love that our catalog was born out of will encourage more people to get to know this part of Russian culture a little bit better.
